While most of our system uses our own microwave network to connect our sites, we do use some leased circuits at some sites. We have problems with maintaining connectivity, particularly where the circuit has to cross LEC-to-LEC carrier service areas. One failure of a central office due to flooding that disabled all circuits through that facility. Isolated most of city we dispatch for (telephone and radio circuits). We used restoration equipment and satellite phones to provide service until C.O. was back in service (aprox. 8 hours). This caused the repeaters which are serviced by the telephone lines not to receive the information or the fire activation tones. At some point the county is going to have to find the funds to purchase a micro wave transfer system from the communication center to the radio tower repeaters. ALSO, I have frequently been frustrated with the ability of the local 9-1-1 phone provider to translate 9-1-1 calls to alternative trunks (which we do when we exercise our backup facility). They also seem unable to dispatch service personnel on a 24-hour basis. If our system goes down, we have to work on it, even if it 2 am! That's why we're emergency, and they are commercial.
